In November 2011, I needed a reliable 4×4 truck because I was moving to Indiana at the start of winter to take a new job. I foolishly purchased this lemon after a short test drive and without taking my Mopar expert friend Richard along. I did crawl all over the truck – top and bottom – to inspect it. The paint and body were in excellent condition, even if the interior suggested it had seen some heavy use. Before I even got out of town a month later, here is what went wrong with it:
One day, my wife and I were driving back from Canada (in a rented car, of course), and we made a short list of inexpensive fun cars that would get twice the gas mileage of the Ram. We drove to the new-car dealership row, looked at a few options and ditched the Ram with the Kia store in exchange for a 2012 Soul in Alien Green. I lost a few thousand dollars on the Ram, but it was worth it in the long run.
Lesson learned: Do not buy a used car without some form of extended warranty.
I drove to Raleigh yesterday to photograph a 1986 Mustang GT for the new Fox Mustang Magazine. The owner, Jeff Keisner, of Comdon Autosport, was very easy to work with. He let me have the 21,000-mile hatchback and sales guy Greg Romano for the afternoon. We found an unfinished stretch of road that was closed to the public, and I enjoyed a rare stress-free photo shoot. This short clip of video includes a couple of sneak peeks from the shoot.
The ’86 will be featured in the first issue of Fox Mustang Magazine. For more information about this new title, visit this link.
Here is what I did yesterday for Charlotte Motor Speedway. The photos will make more sense if you first read my press release about the bulletproof car display for the Food Lion AutoFair on this page.
My Canon 7D has a great video function built in. I used it and my 200mm lens with 1.4:1 extension to capture the moment the first bullet attempted to penetrate the armored Suburban. For this initial shot, all media and speedway staff were asked to stand behind a building on the firing range property in case of a ricochet. For all subsequent firings, we were able to stand within 20 yards of the vehicles. (I recommend watching the video at full screen with your speakers turned on for full effect.)
The first set of photos is what happened when two deputies from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Dept. fired rounds from assault rifles into the driver’s window of The Streit Group’s armored 2011 Chevrolet Suburban.
Here is what the owner of a regular Suburban can expect with one shot to his window.
After the media display, the deputies had some target practice with a pane of bulletproof glass The Streit Group brought for demonstration purposes. Even after eight or more hits from the assault rifles, the back of the pane was still intact and smooth to the touch.
This next batch of photos is just a representation of the Media Day activities.
